Dan Cable to be next Clerk of the Yukon Legislative Assembly

Hon. Nils Clarke, Speaker of the Yukon Legislative Assembly, announced today that the Members' Services Board of the Yukon Legislative Assembly has selected Dan Cable to assume the position of Clerk of the Yukon Legislative Assembly as of May 4, 2019.

Mr. Cable will join the Legislative Assembly on April 1, 2019 and succeed Dr. Floyd McCormick whose last day as Clerk will be May 3, 2019.

Speaker Clarke stated "I am very pleased that Dan Cable has agreed to take on the position of Clerk of the Legislative Assembly. I am sure that all Members look forward to working with him in the coming years."

Mr. Cable has worked at Yukon’s Department of Justice for the last 17 years. He is currently Director of Policy and Communications, a position he has held for the last 13 years. During his tenure at the department, Mr. Cable played a pivotal leadership role in the legislative and communications initiatives for the Correctional Redevelopment and the Land Titles Modernization projects.

Mr. Cable’s departmental responsibilities also included ministerial support and management of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy function at the Department of Justice. He also sat on a variety of Federal, Provincial Territorial committees, dealing with matters from Human Rights to the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics.

Mr. Cable has an undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of British Columbia and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Alaska.

The Members' Services Board is an all-party committee of the Legislative Assembly. The Board’s members include the Speaker, who chairs the Board, Hon. Sandy Silver, Hon. Tracy-Anne McPhee, Brad Cathers and Liz Hanson. The Board was assisted with the competition for the position by Helen Fitzsimmons, Director of Administration, Finance and Systems in the Legislative Assembly Office.

The Clerk is the chief permanent officer of the Legislative Assembly and is responsible for all matters pertaining to managing its operations. The Clerk is the principal authority on the laws, practices and privileges relating to the Legislative Assembly and has overall responsibility for providing advice to the Speaker and all Members on matters of parliamentary procedure. The Clerk oversees the preparation, processing and maintenance of Assembly documents and records. The Clerk also has overall responsibility for parliamentary administration and services provided by the Legislative Assembly Office.

The position of Clerk is classified at the level of a deputy head pursuant to the Public Service Act. An Order-in-Council will be required to give legal effect to the decision of the Members’ Services Board.

The Clerk was recruited through an open competition that started on January 4 and closed on January 25, 2019. The position description and advertisement were shared on the listserv of the Association of Clerks-at-the-Table in Canada. The competition was also posted on the Legislative Assembly’s website, as well as that of the Government of Yukon Public Service Commission and also circulated through the listserv of the Canadian Political Science Association. Two professional executive recruitment firms were also contracted to distribute the information.
