Special and Select Committees
Unlike standing committees, the existence of special and select committees is not mandated by the Standing Orders. Both special and select committees are composed of members appointed by motion of the Legislative Assembly to study a particular matter. An important difference is that once the chair of a special committee tables the committee’s final report, the committee ceases to exist. A select committee may exist for the full length of a Legislative Assembly and issue multiple reports. This distinction has not been closely followed by the Legislative Assembly, but it should be noted that the Standing Orders that apply to these two types of committees, and their reports, are sometimes different.
