Brad Cathers was first elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in the general election of the 31st Legislative Assembly on November 4, 2002. He was re-elected in the general elections of the 32nd Legislative Assembly on October 10, 2006; the 33rd Legislative Assembly on October 11, 2011, the 34th Legislative Assembly on November 7, 2016, and the 35th Legislative Assembly on April 12, 2021.

On September 28, 2022, it was announced that Brad Cathers would be the Yukon Party caucus critic for Health and Social Services, Justice, Finance, Agriculture, and Democratic Institutions.

Brad Cathers was first sworn in as a member of the Executive Council (Cabinet) on December 12, 2005. He was re-appointed to Cabinet on October 28, 2006 and on November 5, 2011.

Brad Cathers’ Cabinet experience includes service as Minister of Health and Social Services, Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources, Minister of Community Services, Minister responsible for the Yukon Housing Corporation, Minister responsible for the Yukon Workers' Compensation Health and Safety Board, Minister responsible for the Yukon Liquor Corporation (including the Yukon Lottery Commission), Minister of Justice and Minister responsible for the Yukon Development Corporation and the Yukon Energy Corporation.

Brad Cathers served as Government House Leader from December 12, 2005 to August 28, 2009, from November 5, 2011 to January 16, 2015 and from May 10, 2016 to the end of the 33rd Legislative Assembly. He served as Deputy Government House Leader from January 17, 2015 to May 9, 2016.

Brad Cathers was appointed a member of the Members’ Services Board by Order of the House on May 13, 2021. He was appointed to the Standing Committee on Rules, Elections and Privileges, and the Standing Committee on Statutory Instruments by Order of the House on May 17, 2021. He is also Vice-Chair of the Special Committee on Electoral Reform, to which he was appointed on May 26, 2021.

Brad Cathers has served on several standing committees, including the Members’ Services Board, the Standing Committee on Appointments to Major Government Boards and Committees, the Standing Committee on Rules, Elections and Privileges, and the Standing Committee on Public Accounts. During the 34th Legislative Assembly, Brad Cathers was a member of the Special Committee on Civil Emergency Legislation. During the 32nd Legislative Assembly he also served on the Select Committee on Anti-smoking Legislation (which he chaired) and the Select Committee on the Safe Operation and Use of Off-road Vehicles.
