The Yukon Legislative Assembly’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts held a public hearing on mental health services in rural Yukon on Wednesday, August 18, 2021.

The hearing examined the Department of Health and Social Services’ response to a report of the Office of the Auditor General of Canada entitled Report of the Auditor General of Canada to the Legislative Assembly of Yukon – Mental Health Services in Rural Yukon – Department of Health and Social Services. This report was released on June 7, 2021 and can be accessed at https://www.oag-bvg.gc.ca/internet/English/yuk_202106_e_43846.html

The Auditor General’s audit focused on whether the department met its responsibility delivering services in rural communities where mental health services have historically been less accessible.

Witnesses from the Department of Health and Social Services, including the Deputy Minister, appeared at the hearing to answer questions from the committee.

The committee will be preparing a report to the Legislative Assembly to provide its observations and recommendations based on both the report of the Auditor General and the evidence provided by the department.

The transcripts and audio recordings of the public hearing will be available shortly on the Public Accounts Committee’s webpage: https://yukonassembly.ca/committees/pac .

Additional supporting documents provided by the department and the Office of the Auditor General of Canada are also available on the committee’s webpage.
