Committee Hearings to be held on Education

The Yukon Legislative Assembly’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts will be holding public hearings on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 and Wednesday January 19, 2022. 

The subject of the hearings will be progress made on the recommendations contained in a report of the Office of the Auditor General of Canada entitled Report of the Auditor General of Canada to the Legislative Assembly of Yukon – Kindergarten Through Grade 12 Education in Yukon – Department of Education. During the 34th Legislative Assembly, on December 11, 2019, the Department of Education appeared at the Public Accounts Committee’s public hearing on the audit report. The committee released a report on its findings on May 7, 2020, the Sixth Report of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts of the 34th Yukon Legislative Assembly, which endorsed all the recommendations of the Auditor General.

The current Public Accounts Committee was appointed by the 35th Yukon Legislative Assembly on May 17, 2021. As part of its responsibility to scrutinize public spending, the committee believes it is important to keep departments accountable for commitments made in response to recommendations from the Auditor General. On September 29, 2021, the Department of Education provided the Public Accounts Committee with an updated response report, outlining how the department is addressing the audit recommendations. The Standing Committee on Public Accounts sought feedback from several organizations. The committee received written submissions from the Yukon Chiefs Committee on Education, Autism Yukon, the Yukon Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Association, the Association of Yukon School Councils, Boards and Committees, the Yukon T1D Support Network, the Yukon Association of Education Professionals and the LDAY Centre for Learning. The public hearings will be held in the Yukon Legislative Assembly Chamber and will be broadcast live on 93.5 FM. The audio will also be streamed live (and archived) on the Legislative Assembly’s website (https://yukonassembly.ca/house-business/coverage-proceedings). Following the hearing, transcripts will be available on the Public Accounts Committee’s webpage.
