Joseph Mewett appointed Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms

Joseph Mewett has been appointed to the position of Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms of the Yukon Legislative Assembly effective October 14, 2020.  Mr. Mewett succeeds Terry Grabowski as Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms.

Mr. Mewett was born in St. Catharines, Ontario and resided there until joining the Canadian Armed Forces Primary Reserves in 1981.  In 1983 he transferred to the Regular Force and in 1984 was posted to the 3rd Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery.  Over the years he served various positions in the Canadian Armed Forces including serving 3 tours of duty, within Canada and overseas.

In 2001, then Master Corporal Mewett and his family headed for the North and a 3-year posting to the Canadian Forces Northern Area Detachment Whitehorse Yukon.  Upon completion of 3 years in the North, Edmonton Alberta was to become his new home.  His 7 years there involved many different professional opportunities with the Canadian Forces.

In July 2008 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and took a 2-year posting with the Canadian Forces Base in Wainwright, Alberta.  In August of 2011, after 30 years of active service, Sergeant Mewett retired from the Canadian Forces and moved back to Whitehorse where he worked for the Department of Environment until his retirement.

Mr. Mewett has significant volunteer experience with Scouts Canada, Royal Canadian Army and Air Cadets, and is currently the Branch President of the Whitehorse Legion.

The role of the Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms is to provide non-partisan services for the Yukon Legislative Assembly and its elected members by performing traditional and ceremonial functions.  Through custom and precedent, the Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms performs a number of protocol and ceremonial duties.
