Whitehorse – On Nunavut Day, during the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Canadian Regional Conference in Victoria, British Columbia, the Speakers of the Legislative Assemblies of the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that formalizes their commitment to collaboration in support of strong and resilient parliamentary democracy across Canada's North.
Signed in the presence of fellow Speakers from across Canada, the MOU establishes a framework for the three territorial Speakers to meet regularly, share knowledge and best practices, and collaborate on issues of common interest. The agreement reflects a shared commitment to promoting safe, respectful, and effective legislative institutions while protecting the integrity of Canada's democratic traditions.
The signing on Nunavut Day underscores the unique relationship among Canada's three northern legislative assemblies and their shared responsibility to advance good governance in the North. Through the MOU, the Speakers have committed to fostering closer cooperation, exchanging ideas and expertise, and working together to address common opportunities and challenges facing parliamentary institutions. The MOU recognizes the long-standing tradition of northerners supporting each other.
