The Yukon Legislative Assembly will hold a Special Sitting in Dawson City on Tuesday, June 13, 2023.
The purpose of the Special Sitting is to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the creation of the Yukon Territory.
The Special Sitting will take place in the original Chamber of the Territorial Council in the Old Territorial Administration Building, now the home of the Dawson City Museum. The Special Sitting will begin at 1:00 p.m. The ceremonial program will include debate on a motion honouring the history of the land and people of Yukon.
Dawson City was the capital and seat of government of the Yukon Territory until Whitehorse became the capital in 1953. The 2023 Special Sitting will mark the sixth occasion that the Assembly has returned to Dawson City and its original Chamber. Special Sittings were held on the 75th and 100th anniversaries of the Yukon Territory in 1973 and 1998. The Assembly also sat in the original Chamber in 1977 to honour Dawson City’s Diamond Jubilee, in 1988 to celebrate the completion of the refurbished historic chambers, and in 2009 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first wholly-elected Yukon Territorial Council.
