Speaker's Youth Outreach in Haines Junction and Teslin

The Hon. Nils Clarke, Speaker of the Yukon Legislative Assembly, and the Clerk of the Assembly, Dan Cable, recently travelled to two community schools to meet with students and give presentations on the Legislative Assembly and Yukon’s democracy.

The Speaker and the Clerk presented to students at St. Elias Community School in Haines Junction and Khàtìnas.àxh Community School in Teslin. They had the privilege of having Sam Johnston, former Speaker of the Yukon Legislative Assembly, sit in on the session in the school where he is an Elder on staff.

All students participated in a question and answer session, were given important information about the House and encouraged to participate in Yukon’s democracy. Students in grades 9 to 12 were also encouraged to sign up for the upcoming Yukon Youth Parliament to be held at the Yukon Legislative Assembly in Whitehorse starting on April 15, 2020.

The Speaker has been travelling to Yukon schools to raise awareness among Yukon students about the Assembly. He has travelled to 5 rural schools so far and intends to continue travelling to schools following the Spring Sitting.
