2026 Spring Sitting Scheduling Information

You may find the following information about the scheduling of the 2026 Spring Sitting of the First Session of the 36th Legislative Assembly useful.

Start Date

The 2026 Spring Sitting will commence at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 19
On December 15, 2025, the Legislative Assembly agreed to the following motion on division:

THAT, notwithstanding Standing Order 75(10), the 2026 Spring Sitting of the Legislative Assembly shall commence on Thursday, March 19, 2026, following the Arctic Winter Games.

As the House set the date for the start of this Sitting, the Premier is not required to advise the Speaker to give notice of the date on which the House shall meet under Standing Order 73.

Deadline to Introduce Government Bills

All government bills to be dealt with during the 2026 Spring Sitting must receive First Reading by Thursday, March 26, the fifth sitting day, pursuant to Standing Order 74.

Length of Sitting

After all government bills are introduced, Standing Order 75 requires that the House Leaders meet to determine the maximum number of sitting days for the Sitting and report to the Assembly by Tuesday, March 31, the seventh sitting day.

The Legislative Assembly will not sit on holidays, including Easter Monday (April 6) and Victoria Day (May 18). Therefore, the following are potential dates on which the House could rise:

  • A 20-day Sitting, the shortest permitted under Standing Order 75(2), would end on Thursday, April 23.
  • A 30-day Sitting, the length determined by Standing Order 75(3) in the event that there is no agreement between the House Leaders, would end on Tuesday, May 12.
  • A 40-day Sitting, the longest possible under Standing Order 75(2), would end on Monday, June 1.
  • A 32-day Sitting, the length of the last four Spring Sittings, would end on Thursday, May 14.

The House may, by adopting a motion, decide to not to follow the usual Monday through Thursday sitting schedule in Standing Order 2(1), and that may alter the potential final day of the Sitting.

Private Members’ Business

The order of business after the Daily Routine on Wednesdays is determined by Standing Orders 14, 14.1 and 14.2. The order of precedence alternates between Opposition Private Members’ Business and Government Private Members’ Business being first during Orders of the Day. As the last Wednesday of the 2025 Fall Sitting was an Opposition Private Members’ Business day, the schedule for the 2026 Spring Sitting will be as follows for the first 31 potential sitting days:

  • March 25     – Government Private Members’ Business
  • April 1     – Opposition Private Members’ Business
  • April 8     – Government Private Members’ Business *
  • April 15     – Opposition Private Members’ Business
  • April 22     – Government Private Members’ Business
  • April 29     – Opposition Private Members’ Business
  • May 6     – Government Private Members’ Business
  • May 13     – Opposition Private Members’ Business

* Since the House will not sit on Easter Monday (April 6), to be identified for debate on April 8, a Government Private Member motion will need to have had notice provided by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 2.

Opposition Private Members’ Business

A roster for the order of business on Opposition Private Members’ Business Wednesdays is determined by Standing Order 14.2.
The last item of Opposition Private Members’ Business debated on the last Wednesday of the 2025 Fall Sitting was identified by the Third Party, in position 3 on the roster. Therefore, the roster for Opposition Private Members’ Business starting on April 1 will be as follows:

  • Position 4: Third Party
  • Position 5: Official Opposition
  • Position 6: Third Party
  • Position 1: Official Opposition
  • Position 2: Official Opposition
  • Position 3: Third Party
